It’s Happy Hour at Starbucks: half-price Frappuccino blended beverages from 3:00 and 5:00 pm daily through May 16th! I know a certain six-year-old who will indeed be happy when he hears this! Yes, that’s right, a six-year-old! My six-year-old!
I was never much of a coffee drinker. In fact, I didn’t drink it at all… until I started spending a LOT of time in the Starbucks Cafe in Barnes and Noble in Jacksonville, FL… every night from 7pm – 11pm, in fact. It was where I escaped to work on my dissertation: a quiet place away from family, chores, and more enticing activities, which would prove to be pretty much anything that wasn’t working on my dissertation.
I started drinking Frappuccino’s as they most resembled coffee ice cream: cool and sweet. As the weather turned cooler, I turned to the warm coffee creations like Caramel Macchiato; and as I spent more and more evenings at the Starbucks Cafe, I enjoyed my coffee creations more and more. On a couple of long drives with the kids, I stopped at Starbucks for a coffee. Connor, then two, was fascinated with this new drink Mommy loved. He wanted to try it! He asked, and asked, and asked… and finally, I gave in. I thought, what harm can one sip do? He won’t like coffee. He’ll stop asking.
Connor took one sip, smiled, and said, “Mmmm, I LIKE coffee!” From then on, he looked forward to every trip to Starbucks… and just before his fourth birthday, Connor announced that he wanted to have his fourth birthday party at Starbucks. Unsure of what the other partygoers’ parents might think about a party for four-year-olds at Starbucks, we decided to celebrate with an early-morning Mommy-Connor coffee break on his fourth birthday. It was a lovely time: good coffee, good conversation, and the BEST company!
Now, at six, Connor still looks forward to his coffee breaks with Mommy. Don’t fret, his coffee isn’t actually all that much coffee, it has a LOT of milk and just a tad of sugar added… but for him, it’s a special treat EVERY time! And for me, well, it’s nice to have someone to share my coffee breaks with from time to time, because even after all this time, he’s still the BEST company!
