Out of the Mouths of Babes: Irony
Irony: a. An expression or utterance marked by a deliberate contrast between apparent and intended meaning. b. Incongruity between what might be expected and what actually occurs. c. An occurrence, result, or circumstance notable for such incongruity.
Three girls are floating on a raft in our neighborhood pool; they are visiting their Grandparents for Father’s Day. Connor is playing ball on the side of the pool; his ball bounces into the water.
Connor to one of the girls: Will you get that ball, please?
Girl: “No.”
Connor shrugs and figures out a way to get the ball on his own; he walks away.
Girl: “The one thing I don’t like about this pool is all of the snotty little kids who come here with their parents.”
Eh-hem… Irony!
