MY THOUGHTS:

“Understand that God is never defeated, no matter what is going on in the world. Since God, who is our Source, is never defeated, as Christians, we can never be defeated! In other words, we always win!” So begins Dr. Creflo Dollar’s book Winning in Troubled Times. Written to encourage Christians to retain and grow their faith, particularly in times of trouble, the book addresses four areas of life: winning in work and in your finances, winning in relationships, winning over negative emotions, and winning over our addictive behaviors. With Biblical references, Dr. Dollar strives to move Christians from self-defeating, worldly behaviors and attitudes toward positive Christian values and behaviors by changing the way they think and the way they view the kingdom of God. Dr. Dollar’s book contains Biblical references, Christian encouragement, and a wealth of good information.

While I can’t quite put my finger on the passage or passages I found troublesome, I was disappointed that the chapters on work and work ethic did not seem to include those of us who have been led to stay at home to raise and school our children. There was much talk of avoiding sloth, working hard, saving for a rainy day, and the lazy remaining poor, but there was no recognition of the times the Lord calls us to work without pay and without an opportunity to save individually, by focusing our efforts on our children, our family, and our home, and the hard work we put in, even without the promise of a financial paycheck.

Overall, this book is straight-forward and easy-to-read. At times, I could visualize Dr. Dollar espousing his message from the pulpit. I could hear his voice (although I’ve never heard him speak) booming in my mind as I read, enunciating his points with an alleluia or an amen that wasn’t included on the black and white page. While I did not agree with all of Dr. Dollar’s statements, as I mentioned in the previous paragraph, I did benefit from reading the book. I was encouraged and renewed in my desire to ensure my life is following the Lord’s plans and would recommend this book to those who may be feeling discouraged with their current state of financial, relational, or emotional stability. Dr. Dollar’s message offers a non-threatening start toward a life following Christian principles and the Lord’s plan to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future (Jeremiah 29:11; NIV).
