Master Innovations: Masterful Help for the Visual Learner

My fourth grader is a visual learner.  He learns best when he can clearly see relationships between and within the concepts he is learning.  He’s good in math, and fractions seem to make sense to him, provided he can visualize the fraction in his mind.  As a result, he enjoyed manipulating and working with the latest product we received to review for the TOS Homeschool Crew:  Master Innovations, LLC’s The Master Fraction.  The Master Fraction is a set of spiral-bound booklets with clear overlays that enable the student to view for himself the relationship between halves, quarters, eighths, and sixteenths; thirds, sixths, and twelfths; and fifths, tenths, and twentieths.

We also received The Master Fraction Workbook containing activities to complete using The Master Fraction overlays.  The workbook begins with identifying fractions and moves on through adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators.  My fourth grader is beyond this level in his fraction work, so I tried out the workbook with my first grader (who is currently completing second grade math work).  He seemed to enjoy the activities. Although I did not feel the workbook gave him sufficient practice with fractions to be used as a stand-alone curriculum, it was certainly a fun way to supplement our current mathematics program.

The Master Fraction overlays can be used on their own or with The Master Fraction Workbook.  The overlays sell for $17.95.  The Workbook sells for $15.95.
