I almost swallowed it, Mom!

“Look Mom, No Tooth!”

This weekend Mom and I traveled to the mountains of Maryland for our annual scrapbooking retreat. Four days of scrapbooking, grown-up conversation, beautiful scenery, and meals cooked by someone else, it doesn’t get much better than that… until the cell phone rings early the second morning, and I hear Ryan’s excited voice, “Mom, my tooth fell out! And Mom, I almost swallowed it, but I didn’t!” Now Ryan is not usually one to talk on the phone. Under normal circumstances I’d consider myself lucky to get a “Hi, Mom;” but this was not normal circumstances, this was a big event! Ryan has been waiting anxiously for this first tooth to fall out for some time now, wiggling it diligently each day to hopefully move it along. Pulling it out as it became sufficiently loose was, of course, never considered. Ryan is not one who responds well to even the thought of pain, or blood: “Mom, I need a Bandaid.” “No you don’t, you’re not bleeding.” “But it might bleed!” So, we waited… and waited, until that morning phone call. Our phone conversation ended with congratulations and promises that nothing would be done with the tooth until I was home. I returned home to the tiniest kernel of a tooth tucked away safely in a Ziploc baggie. And there it remains and the waiting resumes while Grandma puts the finishing touches on Ryan’s very own Tooth Fairy pillow.
