A New Collection

Driving home from swimming lessons today, Connor announced he was starting a new collection. Now, in our family, this is by no means an outrageous announcement; we are a family of collectors. And so, without much thought, I asked, “What kind of collection?”

“A pet collection, Mommy!,” came the excited answer.

“Connor,” I said, “You already have a pet collection. You have Leya (the dog), Chrissy, Tyler, Thomas and Samuel (the cats), the birds and squirrels that come to the bird feeder, all of your Webkinz…”

Does it sound like I was grasping? If you saw our kitchen at meal time, you’d understand that the pets we have are quite a collection enough for our little townhome. And if you knew Connor, you’d understand that he is a true animal lover; he is happiest when surrounded by animals: on a farm, at the fair, at the circus, at the zoo… and he is not easily deterred.

He has asked for cows, goats, chickens, bunnies, and pigs at various times over the past two years. When told we couldn’t keep livestock at our home, he worked out a plan to keep goats and cows outside our townhome: “We’ll keep them in a pen and let the neighbors use them to cut their grass, and then the neighbors won’t mind them living outside.” When told we really didn’t have room for a bunny hutch, he decided we would move to a house with a barn with eight rooms for bunnies – and a bed for him so he can sleep with his bunnies and protect them from foxes.

After his new collection announcement, Connor quickly moved on to discuss the bunny, named Peter Rabbit, he was getting for his birthday. Uh-oh, I guess we had better start looking for that house with the eight-room barn!
