Out of the Mouths of Babes: Are We Doing Anything Special Today, Mommy?

“Mommy,” a little voice says, “is today a special day?”
“Yes, Connor.  It’s Daddy’s birthday.”
“Are we doing anything special today, Mommy,” he asks in an I have something in mind sort of way.

“No, I don’t think so, Connor.”
With that, a little head leans toward my ear and begins to whisper.  “Mommy, I think we should take Daddy to Hooters for his birthday.  He really likes their chicken.  Is that a good idea, Mommy?”
I sigh, and try unsuccessfully to hide a smile.  “No, I don’t think so, Connor.  Not today,” I tell him.
Never easily deterred, Connor decided to share his good idea directly with the birthday Dad.
And so, today after church, we celebrated Patrick’s birthday with a family lunch at Hooters, the boys’ favorite restaurant… because of their first-rate… eh-hem… french fries… which just happen to be gluten and dairy free.

As the boys (all three of them) were posing with the Hooters girls for the birthday photo, Connor says to me, “Come on, Mommy,” and walks over to pull me into the photo.  I had to smile!  “No,  Connor, I’m going to take the photo,” I say.  After the photo, he proudly announces, “I made my silly face!”  Ah, yes, I see that now.  Connor, my sweetheart, you are just too much!

Even I, a most reluctant participant in this family outing, have to admit that our family celebration at Hooters did in fact turn out to be a great way to celebrate our birthday Dad.  Happy Birthday, Patrick!  We love you!

A little side note:  Today in Sunday School, the kids’ classes talked about kindness and “do unto others.”  On the way into Hooters, Connor found a penny.  “Tip,” he said as he slid it into his pocket, and he did indeed leave the penny on the table for our perky waitress.  He does have his moments…
