A few weeks back, the boys and I welcomed fall with a trip to our favorite local
apple orchard. In spite of the 90 degree temperatures, we had a wonderful time picking a bushel of Empire, Ida Red, Golden Delicious, and Red Delicious apples. And since one bushel just didn’t seem like all that many, we picked up another bushel of Gala (my favorite) and Crispin apples in the farm market, and came home with over eighty pounds of apples!
We’ve been enjoying the apples plain, with peanut butter, in apple sauce, in apple butter, and in “Boston Market” apples… but this week it became evident that we weren’t eating the remaining apples quickly enough, and so today, I sauced, baked, and canned what was left.
It took all afternoon, but the house smelled wonderful! The scents of apples, cinnamon, cloves, and all spice combining into a lovely potpourri, a fall-scented potpourri!
It’s funny how certain smells become associated with certain times of the year, isn’t it? Cinnamon and cloves with fall, evergreen and peppermint with winter, fresh flowers with spring, and fresh-cut grass with summer. They are all lovely, and I have wonderful memories associated with all of the seasonal scents, but the fall scents are my favorite!
Jumping in leaves, walking through crackling leaves, Trick or Treating, Thanksgiving amongst friends, crisp Autumn air, football games… all wonders of fall, all memories joined by scents of hot apple cider, cinnamon, cloves, sweet potatoes… can you smell it?
Do you have a favorite scent? Does it bring a special memory to mind? A memory of a season, an event, or a special person perhaps?
