It’s Tuesday: Time to Write!
That’s right, Tuesdays at our home are for writing. Tuesdays are for keeping in touch with our friends. Tuesdays are Pen Pal Tuesdays. Each Tuesday through the school year, my hesitant writers sit down to write a letter to a friend, a cousin, or one of the four little boys we sponsor through World Vision. The letters aren’t long, but they are a fun way to practice the art of drafting a letter as well as handwriting, spelling, capitalization, and punctuation.
Today the boys chose to write letters to two of our World Vision boys: Ryan wrote to Denis in Kenya and Connor to Henry in Honduras. Both Denis and Henry have birthdays coming up, and so we will send the letters along with a few Matchbox cars to help them celebrate their special days.
The boys don’t look to be suffering too much for their efforts, now do they? Don’t tell them, but I suspect that deep down, they actually LIKE Pen Pal Tuesday, especially when they receive a return letter in the mail!
What do I like best about Pen Pal Tuesday? Well, in addition to the writing practice Ryan and Connor are getting, I enjoy seeing what the boys decide to tell their friends. Today, for example, Connor actually wrote that his favorite subject is English Grammar! What?! My math-all-the-way little boy actually likes English Grammar… and what precipitated this change: a poem he is memorizing this week: The Caterpillar by Christina G. Rossetti. I couldn’t stop shaking my head at that one, and I would have probably never been the wiser if it weren’t for Pen Pal Tuesday!
