Making Memories Monday: For the Love of Grandparents

Today is Grandparents’ Day.  I gave my parents, my boy’s grandparents, the best gift I could think of:  I picked up the boys and brought them home, providing my parents with the first quiet night alone at their home in over three weeks.

Happy Grandparents’ Day, Mom & Dad!
The boys had a wonderful time with their Grandparents.  Grandma took them bowling, sightseeing around Vermont, kayaking, and fishing.  She also let them have dessert every night, provided they ate their dinner, and gave them far more computer and Gameboy time than they would ever dream of having at home.
Honestly, I’ve lost track of the number of times I’ve heard, “But Grandma let us do it” and “But Grandma bought us that” and “But Grandma let us have that” in the past twenty-four hours.  After the last time, I turned to the boys and said, “Yes, I know.  That’s what Grandmas do.  That is what my grandparents did for me and that is what I will do for your children, my grandchildren, but it is NOT what Mommies do, and so right now, you are out of luck.”  Connor immediately stated that he was going “back to Grandma’s RIGHT NOW!,” but we had Sunday School, running practice, and AWANA today, so there was no time for the five hour drive back to New Jersey.
Instead of turning the car northward, I just smiled!  Obviously, the boys had a wonderful time with Grandma (and Grandpa, who shares Ryan’s love of historical documentaries) and returned home with a host of lovely memories!  (Unfortunately, all of the photos from their trip are in Grandma’s camera and will have to be uploaded at a later date).

I have fond memories of my Grandparents.  I’ve been told many times that my love of writing came from my paternal Grandfather.  My paternal Grandmother made the best baked lima beans… and the fact that she never did figure out my name was spelled with a y (Jenny) and not an ie (Jennie) is a family joke that still brings a smile to my face today.  My maternal Grandfather taught me to shoot a bb gun and to appreciate the joys of cereal and coffee cake for lunch, and my Nana (my maternal Grandma) had a smile and a manner that could make even the hardest day manageable, and she made the best cheddar cheese toast and spaghetti and meatballs!
My Grandparents are all gone now, but I have a lifetime of memories from times shared with them that continue to bring a smile, a chuckle, or a shake of the head, and I am so glad that my boys now have so many wonderful opportunities to create their own host of memories with their Grandparents!

Do you remember a favorite memory of your grandparents?  How about a favorite memory of your children with their grandparents?  Do you have a wonderful recipe for baked lima beans?
Link up and share this or one of your other special memories for Making Memories Monday this week.

Just a reminder… posts do not have to relate to the topic of my post.  Making Memories Monday posts can be a memory of the past, a story from your present, or an idea you have for creating a memory for the future. It’s your choice. But…
