Out of the Mouths of Babes: Sheer Exhaustion

Connor is attending Vacation Bible School at our church this week.  He goes from 9:00 am until 12:15 pm with apparent non-stop action.  Last night at bedtime, I tucked Connor in, gave him a good night kiss, and started to walk out of the room saying, “Go right to sleep, you have another big day at Bible School tomorrow.”  I was answered with a loud sigh.  Confused, after hearing him say nothing but positive things about his first day at VBS, I asked him what the sigh was for.  “Mommy,” he said, “I’m exhausted.  I’m not tired; I’m exhausted!”  And with that, he fell right to sleep.

Time and time again I am amazed at the words Connor chooses to express himself.  Often times they are not words I would expect a six-year-old to use, especially not with such accuracy… and such feeling.  And time and time again when I ask Connor where he learned a specific word, he replies with the same two words: “Martha Speaks.”  That’s right.  My child, the one for whom I so carefully select only the best curriculum to use in our homeschool, has developed his extraordinary vocabulary by watching a yellow talking dog on PBS Kids.  And so now it is my turn to sigh audibly and to say, “You will not likely catch me saying there isn’t anything for kids worth watching on TV.”
