There’s a time each year,
That we always hold dear,
Good old summer time;
With the birds and the trees’es
And sweet scented breezes,
Summer doesn’t officially begin for another two weeks, but the signs of summer were all around us this week: temperatures in the 90s, thunderstorms every afternoon, extracurricular activities ending for the summer break, lazy afternoons at the pool, trips to the farm for fresh produce, and much excited talk of camp and vacation and summertime plans.
As a child, summer time meant two months off from school, long days at the pool, the scent and taste of sweet honeysuckle and red ripe strawberries, playing in the creek with friends, Vacation Bible School, and of course, visits to Grandma and Grandpa’s house. I have such fond memories of those times, and as I watched my boys this week, I realized that they too see summer as something special, even if as homeschoolers we do continue our learning adventures year round.
This week, the boys performed in their first violin recital, played in a day-long soccer tournament (in 92 degree heat!), picked strawberries at the farm, and spent every afternoon cooling off in the pool: foating on rafts, jumping off the diving board, practicing their swimming strokes, and inventing a host of pool games on their own and with the neighborhood kids.
Watching the boys enjoy the more relaxed pace of summer brought back memories of joyous summer activities from a time gone-by, but summertime is not just for children. Some might argue that New Year’s Eve is a time of new beginnings, but I would suggest that it is summertime that is truly the time of new beginnings, of rejuvenation, and of a return to what matters most: simpler days of family and home.
Good old Summertime,
Those days full of pleasure,
We now fondly treasure,…
In the Good Old Summertime
