As a homeschooling Mom, it’s easy to take ownership of every little setback in the day to day education of your child. It’s easy to question your abilities as a teacher on those days when he adds 7 + 8 and gets 18 or sees c-a-p and reads caboose … or cabbage… or casserole. (And no, I am not making these up!) But then, every now and then, there comes a moment that gives you just a glimpse of success, a smidgen of proof that your child is indeed learning, a bit of encouragement to continue educating your children at home.
Tonight was one of those nights in our home.
Tonight the boys were eating dinner; I was waiting to eat with Patrick. I told the boys I was “baking potatoes for Mommy and Daddy to eat for dinner.” Without missing a beat, Connor responded matter-of-factly, “You should just say, ‘I am making potatoes for Daddy and me.’ Mommy and Daddy is worser. If you say for Mommy and Daddy, people might say ‘Huh? Are there two Mommies here?'”
So, alright, we still have bit of work to do on the “worser,” but… aside from that, the kid is right on. After all, as nice as it might be some days to have another Mommy around here (maybe she’d do a better job at keeping up with the laundry than I seem to be doing as of late), as it stands, there’s just me… and I really was baking a potato for Daddy and a potato for ME, no one else!
As it turns out, my son has indeed been paying attention to his grammar lessons. He is actually learning, and if I’m going to take responsibility for the not-so-great learning performances, I might as well take ownership of this little success as well.
Way to go, Mom! (and by this I mean ME!)
