Holiday Traditions: I want to be a…

Every year, with those words, I’m sent scrambling to pull together the costumes of my boys’ imaginations… and let me tell you, they don’t make it easy.  Over the years, with some help from my Mom, we’ve created Henry the Octopus (of Wiggles fame), Caillou and his cat Gilbert, Thomas the Tank Engine (and Percy), a couple of pandas, a frog, a lamb, and a cow.  Last year, the boys decided they wanted to be a race car and a police car.  “You mean a race car driver and a police man, don’t you?”  To which they replied in unison, “No, just the cars.”  And so they were.

Take caution on the roadways!

This year, Ryan decided in August that he was going to be a red Lego brick for Halloween; we decided this was a costume we could certainly pull together, and we did.  (We found the instructions for the Lego costume in a book Ryan’s Grandma picked up for him at her library’s 10 cent sale, but they can also be found on-line here.)

A LEGO Original Creation

Connor’s initial costume request would have been a bit more difficult; he wanted to be a Lego Minifig, you know the little yellow-headed Lego guys.  Although I’m sure I would have eventually figured out how to create a Minifig costume for him (with some sewing help from Grandma), I can’t say I wasn’t relieved when he changed his mind mid-October.  Connor found his next costume idea in a most unlikely place, the Food Network Magazine.  It was with much enthusiasm that he announced he was NOT going to be a Minifig, but was going to be an ice cream cone for Halloween.  Of course, he did not want to be just any ice cream cone, he wanted to be a twist cone (his favorite treat from Woody’s Ice Cream in Fairfax).  The costume in the Food Network Magazine was for a pink-frosted cupcake, but with a few modifications, the ice cream costume was created!

Soft-serve with a Twist, please.

The boys were pleased with their costumes, although they did find them both a bit difficult to wear when walking through the neighborhood to trick-or-treat; and by the end of the night, Connor was declaring loudly, “Next year my costume isn’t going to have a hat!”  Even so, they collected quite an impressive stash of candy and an equally impressive number of compliments!
